The Minnesota Twins have placed Trevor Plouffe on the 7-day D.L.

The Twins have placed starting 3B Trevor Plouffe on the 7-day disabled list due to a concussion.  Plouffe has played in 37 games for the Twins so far this year and he is 34 for 134 (.254 avg, .759 OPS) with 17 runs scored, 4 homers, 17 RBIs and 1 stolen base.  Jamey Carroll and Eduardo Escobar will likely replace Plouffe until he’s ready to return to action.  The Twins are going to miss Plouffe’s power stroke while he’s out of action.

The Minnesota Twins release Brandon Boggs

The Twins have released 30-year old righty swinging outfielder Brandon Boggs.  Boggs played in 21 games in AAA-ball for the Twins earlier this year and he was 14 for 76 (.184 avg, .608 OPS) with 8 runs scored, 2 homers and 8 RBIs.  Boggs has played in 130 games in his first four years in the majors and he is 68 for 326 (.209 avg, .695 OPS) with 34 runs scored, 4 homers, 10 RBIs and 43 stolen bases.  This is not much of a loss for the Twins.

The Minnesota Twins have placed Darin Mastroianni on the D.L.

The Twins have placed 27-year old righty swinging outfielder Darin Mastroianni on the 15-day disabled list due to a left ankle injury.  He has played in 10 games for the Twins so far this year and he is 2 for 9 (.222 avg, .522 OPS) with 1 run scored and 1 RBI.  He has now played in 85 games in his first two years with the Twins and he is 43 for 172 (.250 avg, .669 OPS) with 23 runs scored, 3 homers, 17 RBIs and 22 stolen bases.  This is a bad break for Mastroianni, as he was likely just about to replace Aaron Hicks as the Twins’ starting CF.

UPDATE:  (5/18/2013) - Darin Mastroianni needs surgery to remove a bone chip in his left ankle, which will cause him to miss the next six weeks.

The Minnesota Twins place Cole DeVries on the D.L.

The Twins have placed 28-year old righty starting pitcher Cole DeVries on the 15-day disabled list due to a strained right forearm.  He pitched in 17 games (16 starts) for the Twins last year in his first taste of the majors and he is 5-5 with a 4.11 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP.  The Twins called up 23-year old lefty starting pitcher Pedro Hernandez to start in DeVries’ spot today and he worked 5 innings allowing 3 hits, 3 earned runs, 3 walks and he whiffed 3 batters to earn a no decision in the Twins’ 4-3 win over the Orioles in Baltimore.  The Twins also activated 27-year old reliever Anthony Swarzak off the D.L. today and he was the winning pitcher as he worked 1 1/3 scoreless innings allowing 2 hits and a walk while whiffing 1 batter.

Drew Butera gets put on the minor league D.L. for the Minnesota Twins

29-year old righty swinging catcher Drew Butera has been put on the 7-day disabled list, but he’s going to miss a lot more time than that after breaking his left hand last night.  Butera played in last night’s AAA opener for the Twins and he was hit in the hand in his only AB of the game.  Butera played in 42 games for the Twins last year and he is 22 for 122 (.198 avg, .550 OPS) with 7 runs scored, 1 homer and 5 RBIs.  He isn’t going to get the call to Minnesota any time soon.

UPDATE:  (4/7/2013) - The Twins will be without Drew Butera for the next 4 weeks.

The Minnesota Twins place Tim Wood on the D.L.

The Twins have placed 30-year old righty reliever Tim Wood on the 15-day disabled list due to a right rotator cuff strain.  Wood pitched in 9 games (0 starts) in spring training for the Twins this spring and he was 2-1 with a 4.91 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP.  Wood has pitched in 57 games (0 starts) in his first three years in the majors and he is 1-4 with 1 save, a 4.50 ERA and a 1.66 WHIP.

The Minnesota Twins lose Deolis Guerra for the next three months

The Twins have lost 23-year old righty reliever/starter Deolis Guerra for at least the next three months due to rib resection surgery.  Guerra pitched in 36 games (0 starts) in AA+AAA-ball for the Twins last year and he was 4-3 with 1 save, a 4.11 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP.  He has now pitched in 191 games (123 starts) in his first seven years in the majors and he is 46-57 with 2 saves, a 4.87 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP.  The Twins won’t miss Guerra too much as he wasn’t going to make the team out of spring training.

The Minnesota Twins lose Anthony Swarzak for at least 1 month

The Twins have lost 27-year old righty reliever/starter Anthony Swarzak for at least the next month.  He fractured 2 ribs in a non-baseball related injury.  Swarzak pitched in 44 games (5 starts) for the Twins last year and he was 3-6 with a 5.03 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP.  He has now pitched in 83 games (28 starts) in his first three years with the Twins and he is 10-20 with a 5.03 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP.  This is going to hurt Swarzak’s chances of making the opening day roster for the Twins.

UPDATE:  (3/23/2013) - The Twins have officially placed Anthony Swarzak on the 15-day disabled list.

The Minnesota Twins shut down Cole DeVries for the rest of 2012

The Twins have shut down 27-year old righty starting pitcher Cole DeVries for the rest of the 2012 season due to a cracked rib. DeVries pitched in 17 games (16 starts) for the Twins this year and he was 5-5 with a 4.11 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP. He gave up 88 hits and he walked 18 batters while whiffing 58 batters in 87 2/3 innings this year, which aren’t bad numbers. But, he also had trouble with the long ball as he gave up 16 homers this year. That being said, DeVries pitched well enough to get a chance to compete for a spot in the starting rotation for the 2013 season next spring.

The Minnesota Twins place Denard Span on the D.L.

The Minnesota Twins have placed 28-year old lefty swinging CF Denard Span on the 15-day disabled list due to a sprained shoulder. Span has played in 108 games for the Twins so far this year and he is 126 of 440 (.286 avg, .742 OPS) with 60 runs scored, 3 homers, 35 RBIs and 14 stolen bases. Span has now played in 569 games in his first five years in the majors and he is 649 of 2,278 (.285 avg, .747 OPS) with 349 runs scored, 22 homers, 224 RBIs and 87 stolen bases. The Twins should be o.k. until Span returns to action.
